007 Restaurant: Fouquet's

This traditional restaurant, inextricably linked to film and cinema, has embodied the spirit of the French "high class brasserie" since 1899. On the corner of avenue George V and the Champs-Elysées in the 8th district, it is THE place to be in Paris and for more than a century has been a popular meeting place for people from the world of cinéma, arts and culture. Great classical traditional cuisine French dishes, created by the Chef Jean-Yves Leuranguer, a 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France' prizewinner, have given this legendary restaurant its first-class reputation.

"James Bond had his first drink of the evening at Fouquet's. It was not a solid drink. One cannot drink seriously in French cafés. Out of doors on a pavement in the sun is no place for vodka or whisky or gin. A fine à l'eau is fairly serious, but it intoxicates without tasting very good. A quart de champagne or champagne à l'orange is all right before luncheon, but in the evening one quart leads to another quart and a bottle of indifferent champagne is a bad foundation for the night. Pernod is possible, but it should be drunk in company, and anyway Bond had never liked the stuff because its liquorice taste reminded him of his childhood. No, in cafés you have to drink the least offensive of the musical comedy drinks that go with them, and Bond always had the same thing - an Americano - Bitter Campari, Cinzano, a large slice of lemon peel and soda. For the soda he always stipulated Perrier, for his opinion expensive soda water was the cheapest way to improve a poor drink."

The film's plot has Bond investigating gold smuggling by gold magnate Auric Goldfinger and eventually uncovering Goldfinger's plans to attack the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. Goldfinger was the first Bond blockbuster, with a budget equal to that of the two preceding films combined. Principal photography took place from January to July 1964 in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the U.S. states of Kentucky and Florida.

007 Travelers Interview: Myrtha Zwahlen / Hotel Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen

007 Travelers visited Hotel Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen, and had an honour to meet Mrs. Myrtha Zwahlen. 

We would also like to thank Zhao Xiangdong of Hotel Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen for organizing this meeting.

We asked her about her hotel, about James Bond and traveling and of course filming of 007 movie "On Her Majesty´s Secret Service" (1969), starring George Lazenby.

007 Connection: "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"'s (1969) telephone booth scene, where Bond tries to contact London by phone, was filmed in the parking lot of Hotel Jungfrau and hotel itself is visible also a short time when Bond and Tracy drive along the street in front of the hotel with their Mercury Cougar.






1. So, you owned Hotel Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen for 20 years?
Yes, it was from 1963 to 1983. My husband bought the hotel in 1963 and we sold it in 1983 and moved over there (shows the house opposite of Hotel Jungfrau). We had both the Hotel Kreuz and Jungfrau, but we only had them only for a short time.

2. And did the current owners buy the hotel from you?
No, the first buyer, he was not here a long time, but he sold it again,and the next owner owned the hotel for 27 years, but sold the hotel to Mr. Zhao in April or May this year (2014).

3. Can you tell us something about the filming of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969)? We know some places, like the telephone booth scene was filmed here.
Yes, it was over there in the parking lot. And then there is the place at the top of the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria) and then there was an ice-rink, where the car racing was.

4. You said earlier that Mr. Lazenby was not the most likeable man...
No, but Diana Rigg, she was a very, very nice lady. 
Sometimes when they had to go out during a meal and when they came back, my husband asked nicely "Shall I heat the food?" and things like that, Diana Rigg always said: "No, no, no need to", but Mr. Lazenby always said "I don't like this and I don't like that" and complained about everything. He was here when they opened the Bond World 007, but I didn't go there.



5. Did some of the cast and crew stay in the Hotel Jungfrau?
Some of them stayed in Mürren, some of them had to stay in Grindelwald, but mostly they stayed in Mürren. But some people ate in the hotel's restaurant. Diana Rigg wanted champagne in the morning.

6. Who is your favourite James Bond actor?
Diana Rigg. I liked her so much. Then there was Blofeld (Telly Savalas), but he was only here a short time.

Most of the James Bond actors (leading male role) I like Roger Moore, Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. I like these three. George Lazenby was new and he had not acted before. It is a pity that Roger Moore was not in the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969).

And the man who gave the money, Albert Broccoli, oh, he was a nice man. He ate here as well and he asked was everything OK, sometimes he came and payed for everything and he was such a nice man.

7. How about other producer Harry Saltzman, was he also here?
Yes, but I didn't know him. He was always busy, came in and went out all the time. An active man.

8. The best Bond movie?
I can't tell you exactly which one. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) has a special meaning. I don't like crime movies, but I will watch Bond movies when they come on television.

9. Which is the best place where you have traveled so far?
We travelled a lot, but not anymore. We went to Canada to see my sister, we stayed there for few days and then we moved down to California. That we liked, the States.
   
10. Which is the place where you would like to visit but have not been yet?
I would like to go to Scandinavia. Nowadays, it is much easier to travel to countries.

007 Travelers Interview: Annelis Stähli-von Allmen / Hotel Eiger Mürren

007 Travelers visited Hotel Eiger Mürren, and met Mrs. Annelis Stähli-von Allmen.
We asked her about her hotel, about James Bond and traveling and of course
filming 007 movie "On Her Majesty´s Secret Service" (1969), starring George Lazenby.

007 Connection: George Lazenby has stayed here in 2013 during opening of BOND WORLD 007.

 Also while filming "On Her Majesty´s Secret Service" (1969) part of the filming crew stayed here and they together with George Lazenby celebrated in Hotel Eiger´s Tächi Bar.

 He also played poker in Hotel Eiger for so long against Telly Savalas (Ernst Stavro Blofeld) and lost, so producer Harry Saltzman later asked Savalas to return the money to George Lazenby.


1. How long did you work in Hotel Eiger Mürren?
I grew up in the Hotel Eiger, I started working here full time for the Winter Season 1959/60, from the beginning of December 1959, then my father had a heart problem in January 1960 and I run the hotel with my mother, married in 1964 to Walter Stähli from Brienz and together we run the place till he passed away very suddenly at the age of 62 in 1997, my mother followed the same year being 89, I retired when my son Adrian married Susanna in 2007, I will be 77 at the end of October!

2. Tell us about George Lazenby, filming of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) and anything that comes to your mind when the cast and crew of OHMSS stayed in Mürren?
George Lazenby stayed at the Palace Hotel, he used to come to the Tächi Bar for dinner on several occasions and I found him a very nice person. As the crew was always busy until about 5 pm, when they were free they needed some dinner, and as our barman Paul Köster, who was actually the barman in the film, was always with the crew on Schilthorn, they very often came to have dinner at the Eiger. The producers Mr. Broccoli and Mr. Saltzman and the director Peter Hunt, often also the Canadian investor of the Schilthornbahn, Bart Morgan were eating in the Tächi Bar which had been turned into a à la carte Restaurant with high quality of food. When the bosses were there, the stuntmen might sit on the table next to them and they were always anxious that they got served just the same! We had two super buffet dinners, one was for the crew to cheer them up, the other was a wedding party and I brought Sandra, my daughter, then aged 6 months, down to introduce her and Diana Rigg offered her some champagne which she seemed to enjoy :) I think this is why her taste of wine is so excellent and she became a wine expert! I have nothing but good memories of the time of the film.

George Lazenby came back to Mürren for the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the film OHMSS and he stayed with us at the Eiger. It was really nice seeing him again and talking of the film.

3. Who is your favourite James Bond actor? (leading male role)
Maybe Sean Connery – or Roger Moore. I have not seen all the Bond Movies but it’s hard to make a choice between the two.

4. The best Bond movie?
I think OHMSS – as it was filmed in reality, not computer animation – there are so many lovely outdoor scenes. Just blowing up Piz Gloria was filmed in Pinewood studios, Bart Morgan had been invited to witness this – he said it was spectacular.

5. Which is the best place where you have traveled so far?
The best place for me is Hawaii.

6. Which is the place where you would like to visit but have not yet been?
I would like to visit New Zealand one day.

After arriving at the port of Tallinn, we took a free bus ride directly to Sokos Hotel Viru.





We got a superior room No. 715, with an extra bed.




















Soon we headed to the Children´s Museum (LASTEMUUSEUM) (address: Kotzebue 16) to see what is in there.

Then it was time to go for drinks. Well hello there, Harry´s New York Bar of Radisson Blu Hotel Tallinn! It is located in the hotel lobby. (address: Ravala Puiestee 3)

Nice looking place with its grand piano and all. The staff had cool NY styled uniforms. You just go to see the place yourselves! Little Bondette of ours had an orange juice. We adults had something else.

Yes! This Sean Connery bronze statue (made by Tiiu Kirsipuu) can be found in the yard of Scottish Club or Šoti Klubi of Tallinn, (address: Uus 33) which dates back to Soviet times, is an exclusive society which counts many of Estonia's most powerful politicians and businessmen among its members. Although it has a public restaurant in its building in Tallinn's Old Town, membership of the club is usually by invitation only. New name of this place is now Leib Resto.

A new day in Tallinn has begun.




Since we are the Agent Travelers, we visited also KGB Museum (KGB MUUSEUM), which is located on the 23rd floor of Sokos Hotel Viru (address: Viru Väljak 4). Our tour started at 10.00.





Open
Museum is open 10.00 - 17.30 from Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays.


Admission
Price for Sokos Hotel Viru clients is 7 euros / person. For others 9 euros / person. The duration of the tour is approx. Museum ticket allows you the free entrance to Café Amigos night club on the same day.

We experienced interesting things presented by our great guide Margit.





She showed colour explosives in the wallet, and phones that had a direct connection to the KGB Headquarters.




Is that the same red phone that the Head of KGB Anatol Alexis Gogol uses e.g. in the movies "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker"?

Then it was time to visit an Amusement park near the harbour. A German Remmi-Demmi was visiting in the area.
